History

1986: Foundation of Air Europa, it begins operating as a commercial airline.

1991: The Company is sold to a group of investors led by Mr. Juan José Hidalgo.

1993: Air Europa becomes the first private company in Spain to operate domestic flights, thus putting an end to Iberia’s monopoly.

1994: The Company starts operating flights from Madrid to Barcelona, competing for Iberia’s most profitable itinerary.

1994: Air Europa, together with FCC –a reputed construction and services firm- create Eurohandling in order to offer Handling services to other carriers operating in Spanish airports.

1995: Air Europa flights to London and New York, thus entering the international flights market.

1996: Air Europa runs 750 weekly flights and initiates other itineraries such as Paris, Varadero, Salvador da Bahia, Asturias, Bilbao and Vigo.

Air Europa creates a branch for regional flights called Air Europa Express, with a fleet of turboprop ATP-64.

1998: Air Europa joins a new holding company: Globalia Corporacion Empresarial.

1999: Air Europa incorporates the first six cutting-edge B737 out of the 15 it has nowadays.

2000: Air Europa purchases the first B767-300 directly from Boeing for transoceanic flights.

Air Europa sets a fidelity programme for customers called "Flying Blue", which currently has over 130,000 members.

Air Europa agrees code-shared routes with Alitalia, from MAD and BCN to other 11 national destinations.

2002: Air Europa implements wing-lets technology to the latest B737-800 aircrafts. This reduces fuel consumption significantly and pollutes less.

2005: Air Europa became the first Spanish airline to offer direct flights to China. In October the ground handling division, Globalia Handling, consolidated its various companies under a single commercial brand known as Groundforce.

2006: At the end of the year the company had 37 aircraft, with which it transported over 9 million passengers. Operating income almost reached the 1000 million euro mark.


2007: Air Europa inaugurated two new transatlantic routes: Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Its fleet of 40 aircraft is one of the most modern in Europe, with an average age of 3.5 years.  On the 1 September the company officially joined the SkyTeam Alliance, adopting the prestigious Flying Blue card as its tool for promoting customer loyalty.
